WEST VALLEY CITY — One man died and another was seriously injured after two cars collided at a Mountain View Corridor intersection Friday morning, police said.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Mountain View Corridor and 5400 South about 9:30 a.m., according to West Valley Police Sgt. Jason Johnson.
Johnson said investigators believe one of the vehicles was southbound on the highway and the other was westbound on 5400 South when one of the vehicles ran a red light, causing a collision.
“We haven’t determined yet who ran the red light,” he said.
One of the drivers, whose name and age weren’t immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The other driver was taken to a hospital in “serious but stable condition.”
Johnson said speed appears to be a factor in the crash; impairment or holiday traffic wasn’t believed to be factors. It remains under investigation.
“The investigators are looking at scuffs, skidmarks, vehicle damage, if there was seat belts used — that kind of information,” he explained.
Police said they believe there were witnesses who saw the crash but left the scene. They hoped to gather information from those individuals as a part of the investigation. Anyone who may have seen the crash happen is encouraged to call Valley Emergency Communications Center at 801-840-4100.
Southbound lanes of the highway Mountain View Corridor were closed at 4100 South but both directions of the highway were closed in the area of the crash, according to UDOT. Both directions of 5400 South were also closed as authorities investigate the crash. Johnson estimated that the scene of the crash would be cleared by Friday afternoon.
This is a breaking news update and will be updated as more information becomes available.
