Former Provo WR Ty Jones to enter transfer portal after graduating from Washington

PROVO — A former Utah high school football standout is headed to the transfer portal.

Could BYU or Utah be in his future?

Former Provo High star Ty Jones, who just finished his fourth year at Washington, will graduate and transfer for his final two seasons of eligibility, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound wide receiver announced Wednesday on social media.

A 2019 All-Pac 12 Academic honoree in the business school, Jones just completed his second junior season after redshirting in 2019 and starting all four of the Huskies’ games during the truncated, pandemic-affected season of 2020. He finishes his Washington career with 702 receiving yards and six touchdowns, the bulk of them coming as a sophomore in 2018.

“I can’t thank you all enough for taking a kid from Provo, Utah in as one of your own and embracing me,” Jones wrote on Twitter. “While being here, I’ve grown so much as a player and more importantly as a man. I have nothing but respect for the UW football program, Husky nation, and the city of Seattle.

“This definitely won’t be the last time I’m in Seattle but for now this is the right decision for me.”

Prior to the 2020 season, Jones was the Washington representative on the Pac-12’s #WeAreUnited group that protested medical, social and financial injustices in college football.

Prior to enrolling at Washington, Jones led Provo to the best four-year run in the program’s modern era, including 1,523 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior for the Bulldogs. A U.S. Army All-American and all-state, first-team selection, Jones held offers from BYU, Utah, Ohio State and Oregon, among others, before ultimately signing with the Huskies.

Wherever he goes, he’ll have two years of eligibility remaining — even though he’s played in four seasons for Washington. Jones played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2017, then started eight of 14 games as a sophomore in 2018 when he totaled 491 yards and six touchdowns. He played in the NCAA-maximum four games as a redshirt in 2019 then took advantage of the NCAA’s free year of eligibility as a redshirt junior in 2020.

As a graduate transfer, Jones will be immediately eligible at his next destination.
