State colleges: USC edges Utah 60-59 in women’s basketball

It was a game of runs and lead changes at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Friday, as the Utah women’s basketball team battled USC, falling just short in a 60-59 defeat. Utah is 3-6 overall this season and 2-6 in Pac-12 play. Despite holding the lead for over 24 minutes of the game, Utah’s offense stumbled in the second half, shooting just 25 percent from the floor while being outscored 24-22. The Utes shot 30 percent overall and 34 percent from the 3-point line for the game.

Utah’s Brynna Maxwell finished with a game-high 20 points, shooting 5 of 14 from the floor, 3 of 7 from behind the arc and a perfect 7 for 7 from the free-throw line.

Dru Gylten put up a season-high 15 points, which included a career night at the free-throw line where she went 9 for 10. Gylten added seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

California Baptist 98, Utah Valley 69 • In Riverside, California, a blistering start by the Lancers in the CBU Events Center put the Wolverines in a big hole. The Lancers (9-0, 1-0 WAC) remained perfect on the season behind a 36-point opening quarter. CBU scored the first 11 points and led 19-6 before finishing the first quarter on a 17-2 run. The run included a streak of 10 straight misses by UVU (2-2, 0-1) and six consecutive makes from the field by the Lancers. Josie Williams finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Utah Valley.

Men’s basketball

Utah Valley 77, California Baptist 50 • In Orem, Jamison Overton cored 18 points and Fardaws Aimaq recorded a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double to lead the Wolverines over the Lancers to open Western Athletic Conference play at the UCCU Center. Utah Valley improves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in WAC play. California Baptist falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. The two teams will meet up again on Saturday night at the UCCU Center in the new back-to-back game WAC format.
